IITs Getting More Transparent

Performance Cards for IIT-JEE Candidates

Students appearing in the next Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admissions to IITs will get performance cards specifying marks & the ranks secured by them in the test.

For the first time , the JEE Board would issue such performance cards which can be considered as certificates by many other institutes wanting to give admission to JEE candidates. The board will also put out the answers of the questions on its websites to help students make assessment of their performance.

At present, the IITs are not issuing any score cards to students. Certain institutes which are giving admission to JEE candidates, have to get authenticated data from the JEE Board on the list of students and marks secured by them.

The performance cards will be issued two weeks after the results are declared. But the marks of the students can be put out in the website just a week after the results are declared. The IITs for the first time will put out the answers of the question on the website. This will help students know how they have performed in the examination. The answers will be put on the JEE website two weeks after the exam.

About four lakhs students had appeared in the test last year for nearly 8200 seats in 15 IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad. The number of candidates is expected to go up this year as the seats in these institutes will be increased to over 10000 as the older IITs are expanding their intake for implementing the OBC quota.

The IITs have decided to stick to the existing cut-off formula for finalizing the cut-off list. As per the formula, the average marks secured by the students in each subject will be considered as the subject-wise cut off, but the final cut-off will be decided considering the gross marks secured by the students and the availability of seats.

CIC Rules to Publicise Details of JEE Candidates

Home

In a decision that would make the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) process more transparent, the Central Information Commission (CIC) has ruled that details of candidates such as registration number, name, parents' name, category, and marks secured should be open to public scrutiny. Overriding the objections of IIT Guwahati (IIT-G) - the organizing institute for JEE 2009 - Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi ruled that providing these details under the Right to Information Act does not constitute invasion of privacy. During the hearing, IIT-G Public Information Officer D Boro had stated that the data required by the appellant Rajeev Kumar, such as registration number, name, parents' name ''are personal information of the candidates and should not be revealed to the third party''. Gandhi ruled that while personal details like mobile phone numbers and e-mail addresses would fall in the category of information, merely giving the name of the person and the pin code with the marks obtained could not be considered an invasion of privacy. The decision is being viewed as an important step in making the process transparent as disclosure of 2006 data had shown that formulas for calculating subject cut-offs did not tally. Irregularities were alleged in marks scored by wards of faculty members.
